The 4 Pillars of Human Life

In the Indian tradition, a human life is considered meaningful and fulfilling when all four of its core foundations are honored and realized:

1) Dharma - Through education and life experience, a person comes to understand their purpose and rightful place in society. Living according to dharma means following the moral and ethical principles of one’s role or stage in life.

2) Kama - Every human being has desires and aspirations. Without honoring these longings, one cannot experience deep happiness or satisfaction. Even if our highest desire is the well-being of all living beings, or if the goal seems unreachable, we must at least feel we’re moving toward it to remain fulfilled.

3) Artha - As we live, we create and accumulate material resources: property, income, wealth. These are known as artha. Without a home, a livelihood, or a sense of material stability, life can feel like a fruitless wandering - unless one is a natural-born ascetic.

4) Moksha - Spiritual growth gradually brings a person to moksha, or liberation. This liberation can take many forms, including freedom from the attachments and experiences of the other three aims. The theme of moksha usually unfolds most fully in later life, when one’s "vessel" of dharma, kama, and artha is full - when there is something to give back. Still, the winter of life must be prepared for in the summer, and this is where sacred rituals can help sustain and support a seeker’s spiritual path.

Each person has their own unique balance of these four foundations - and that’s perfectly natural. But for life to feel whole and truly joyful, all four must be present in some proportion.

To support this integration, we offer a real-time support through sacred rituals performed directly in Indian temples.

TYPES OF THE CEREMONIES

There are several types of ceremonies in Indian temples.

The main ones are divided into 3 types:

- Archana

- Pooja

- Homa/yagya/havan

Archana - "veneration, glorification." This is a ceremony of exalting the symbol or image of the Deity with the utterance of mantras, as well as the name and nakshatra of the one who ordered Archana. Done in front of the appropriate altar during the service.

Pooja - "worship". This is a ceremony of deeper and more intimate appeal to the image or symbol of the Deity with the recitation of a series of mantras, offerings in the form of fruits and flowers, as well as repeated recitation of the name and nakshatra of the one who ordered the Puja. The impact of the puja is considered to be stronger and more lasting than the Archanas.

Homa is a fire ceremony or fire sacrifice (feeding the fire, which gives food to the gods to whom Homa is addressed). Often a separate altar or hearth is built for the homa. This is the most profound, intimate and powerful appeal to the Divine. Homa is usually ordered not for 1 person, but for the whole family.
