WHAT ARE RITUALS FOR?

In India, before any important undertaking or event, people visit temples to enlist the support and blessings of higher powers. They seek to attract good luck and success into their lives, which require the participation of all forces of nature and the world, from the divine to the elemental.

These rituals aim to obtain a variety of benefits, such as health, prosperity, family growth, peace of mind, overcoming obstacles, getting rid of negative karma, etc.

TYPES OF RITUALS

There are several types of rituals in Indian temples, which can be broadly categorized into 3 main types:

• Archana

• Pooja

• Homa/Yagya/Havan

Archana - Meaning "veneration" or "glorification," Archana is a ritual that involves exalting the symbol or image of the Deity through the utterance of mantras, as well as the name and nakshatra (lunar mansion) of the person who has requested the Archana. This ritual is performed in front of the appropriate altar during the service.

Pooja - Translated as "worship," Pooja is a more intimate and profound ritual that involves a deeper appeal to the image or symbol of the Deity. It includes the recitation of a series of mantras, offerings such as fruits and flowers, and the repeated invocation of the name and nakshatra of the individual who has ordered the Pooja. The impact of Pooja is generally considered to be stronger and more lasting than that of Archana.

Homa - This is a fire ritual or fire sacrifice, where offerings are made into a sacred fire, which serves as a medium to convey food to the gods to whom the Homa is addressed. A separate altar or hearth is often constructed for this purpose. Homa is regarded as the most profound and powerful appeal to the Divine and is typically performed not just for an individual but for the benefit of the entire family.
